Mattresses are a big bedroom item that, with a little care and maintenance, can give you years of good sleep. Add the following steps to your cleaning routine and your mattress will stay comfy and clean as the day you bought it.
Use a Mattress Pad on Every Mattress in Your Pad
Waterproof mattress pads cut down on the potential for stains on your mattress and block dust and dust mites from making a home in your mattress fabric. They’re an essential for those who eat and drink in bed (or bed-wetting kids’ beds), and they are a whole lot easier to throw in the wash when stained than an entire mattress.
Launder your mattress pad regularly with your sheets. Many waterproof mattress pads are available in cool-to-the-touch fabrics for optimal nighttime temperature control. There are even wool mattress pad options for an organic and natural approach to balancing sleep temperature and mattress cleanliness!
Clean Your Mattress
While your sheets and mattress pad are in the wash, take a look at your mattress surface. Could it use a cleaning? A light clean would involve a simple and quick vacuuming, using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner. If you don’t use a mattress pad, you might need to spend a bit more time sucking up dust and dust mites from quilted fabric and textured surfaces.
Spending a third of our life in bed inevitably means that a lot of sweat ends up accumulating in our mattresses. To freshen it up, sprinkle baking soda all over the mattress surface and let it sit (or rub it in with a scrub brush to bond to stains and stink). Bonus points for sprinkling a little lavender essential oil as well, for a sleep-inducing fresh scent! The next step is to vacuum up the baking soda and essential oil to pull up the moisture, mildew, and generalized funky odours. For tough stains, consider mixing your baking soda in a spray bottle with cold water, a little dish soap, or even a little hydrogen peroxide.
Rotate to Reduce Body Impressions
Every six months or so, rotate your mattress, so that the head of the bed is now the foot and vice versa. We tend to sleep in the same spots and in the same positions on our beds. Rotating your mattress will ensure that those spots don’t get compressed too fast compared to the rest of the mattress. Thankfully, this maintenance tip is only needs about twice a year, because it can be quite the upper body workout!
